My Story
I want to be a professional bicycle racer. There. I said it. “Live True” - that’s my motto, right? Well, I really want to be a professional bicycle racer. I’ve wanted to be one since May 9th, 1993. That was the date of my first mountain bike race. I was 12 years old, and I finished 7th out of 14 in the 12-14 age category at the Lake Berryessa mountain bike challenge. I fell in love with the sport, the competition, the camaraderie. I saw Don Myrah crush the Pro Men’s field by 15 minutes or so. And, from that point on, I knew that I wanted to do that, be that: race professionally.
Here it is now, 2008. I am 27 28 years old, an independent web designer with a masters degree in sport psychology and 20 15 10 6 pounds of extra “baggage.” I still ride. I plan on racing more. My training is sporadic, at best. And, when I do compete, I get my ass handed to me, thoroughly. But, I still want to be a pro. I can’t help it.
So, I have two options:
- I can ignore my heart’s desire to be a professional cyclist, accept that I’m a little old to “get back in the game,” and still ride (and even race) recreationally. Or…
- I can pursue my dream with all its impracticality, irresponsibility, and financial “un-wisdom.”
This website is here because I have chosen #2 from this list. I want to die without regrets. And, even if I fail along the way, 100 times over, get told I am too fat, too old, have no-talent, or just never win…I can’t live any other way. So, here’s to “living true.” Cheers! Wish me luck!
-Andy
